Caring for Your Terrarium

Your terrarium is a living ecosystem. With just a little attention, it will thrive for years to come.

Lighting

Place your terrarium in bright, indirect light, such as near a window with filtered sunlight. Avoid direct harsh sunlight as it can overheat the glass and scorch the plants inside. If natural light is limited, a small grow light for a few hours a day helps keep the plants healthy and vibrant.

Watering and Misting

Mist your terrarium lightly once or twice a week, depending on humidity levels. The soil should feel slightly damp, never soggy. If you notice condensation building up heavily on the glass and not clearing within a day, reduce misting. If the soil looks dry and the moss feels crisp, increase misting slightly.

Springtails

You may notice tiny white or grey creatures moving through the soil. These are springtails, and they are a completely normal and helpful part of your terrarium's ecosystem. They feed on mold, fungus and decaying plant matter, helping to keep the environment clean and balanced. Their presence is actually a good sign that your terrarium is healthy and functioning as it should.

Mold and Fungus

A small amount of white fuzzy growth or tiny mushrooms appearing occasionally is natural in a closed, moist environment and usually clears on its own as the ecosystem balances itself, often with the help of springtails. However, if mold spreads rapidly, covers a large area or has a strong smell, open the lid for a day or two to increase airflow and reduce moisture. If it continues to grow despite this, please reach out to us for guidance.

Browning and Leaf Decay

Some yellowing or browning of older leaves is a natural part of the plant's lifecycle and nothing to worry about. Simply trim away affected leaves with clean scissors to keep the terrarium tidy. If browning spreads quickly across multiple plants or the entire terrarium looks unwell, this could be a sign of an imbalance and we are happy to help.

General Care and Signs of a Healthy Ecosystem

A healthy terrarium will show steady, slow growth, green moss and firm leaves. Keep it away from direct air conditioning vents or heaters, as sudden temperature changes can stress the plants. Open the lid occasionally for fresh air circulation if your terrarium is closed.
